Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Srinagar → Sonamarg → Nichnai (Trek Start)

Drive: Srinagar to Sonamarg (2.5 hours). Trek: Sonamarg to Nichnai campsite (12 km, 6–7 hours).

The trek begins from Sonamarg. You hike through dense pine and birch forests, crossing the Nichnai stream multiple times. The trail is gradual and serves as a warm-up. Camp at Nichnai meadow (3,500 m) — a vast, flower-filled grassland.

Elevation gain: ~800 m | Difficulty: Moderate

Day 2: Nichnai → Vishansar Lake

Trek: 12 km, 6–7 hours. Cross the Nichnai Pass (4,100 m) — the first major pass.

The climb to Nichnai Pass is steep but rewarding — at the top, you get your first view of Vishansar Lake far below, a deep blue jewel cradled by mountains. Descend to the lake and camp on its shores. The sunset reflected in the lake is one of the most photographed moments of the trek.

Elevation: 3,500 m → 4,100 m → 3,710 m | Difficulty: Hard

Day 3: Vishansar Lake → Krishansar Lake → Gadsar

Trek: 13 km, 7–8 hours. Cross Gadsar Pass (4,180 m) — highest point of the trek.

Start early for the climb to Gadsar Pass. The approach is steep and may have snow patches even in August. At the top, you see a panoramic 360-degree view of the entire Himalayan range. Descend to Gadsar Lake, passing through meadows carpeted with wildflowers (July–August). The variety of flowers here — blue poppies, buttercups, asters, primulas — is extraordinary.

Elevation: 3,710 m → 4,180 m → 3,600 m | Difficulty: Hard

Day 4: Gadsar → Satsar Lakes

Trek: 10 km, 5–6 hours. Easier day through meadows.

A relatively easier day. Walk through the Gadsar Valley — one of the most scenic stretches of the trek. The trail meanders through grasslands, shepherd huts, and Gujjar settlements. Reach the Satsar Lakes (seven interconnected lakes at different levels). Camp near the largest one.

Elevation: 3,600 m → 3,600 m | Difficulty: Moderate

Day 5: Satsar → Gangabal Lake (via Zajibal Pass)

Trek: 12 km, 7–8 hours. Cross Zajibal Pass (4,050 m).

Another pass day. The climb to Zajibal is less steep than Gadsar but longer. From the pass, you get the first view of Gangabal Lake — a massive sapphire-blue lake with Mt. Harmukh (5,142 m) towering behind it. The descent to Gangabal is steep but the view makes every step worth it. Camp at the lake shore.

Elevation: 3,600 m → 4,050 m → 3,570 m | Difficulty: Hard

Day 6: Gangabal Lake → Nundkol Lake (Rest/Explore Day)

Trek: 3 km easy walk between the twin lakes.

A well-deserved rest day. Walk from Gangabal to its twin, Nundkol Lake. Spend the day exploring the shores, photographing Mt. Harmukh's reflection in the water, and simply soaking in the beauty. Many trekkers say this is the most beautiful campsite they have ever seen.

Difficulty: Easy

Day 7: Nundkol → Naranag (Trek End) → Srinagar

Trek: 15 km, 5–6 hours descent. Drive: Naranag to Srinagar (2.5 hours).

The final day is all downhill. Descend through ancient forests, crossing Trunkol meadow, and reach Naranag village — home to the ancient Hindu temple ruins of Naranag (8th century). Transport picks you up for the drive back to Srinagar.

Elevation: 3,500 m → 2,200 m | Difficulty: Moderate (knees take a beating on the descent)

Fitness Preparation

KGL is not a casual walk — you need to prepare:

• Start 2–3 months before: Run or jog 5 km daily. Build to 10 km runs by the last month.

• Stair climbing: Climb 20–30 floors daily (simulates altitude gain).

• Leg strength: Squats, lunges, and step-ups 3 times per week.

• Cardio endurance: You should comfortably jog for 45 minutes without stopping.

• Practice with a loaded backpack: Do weekend hikes with a 10–12 kg backpack.

• Altitude acclimatization: Spend a day in Sonamarg (2,740 m) before starting the trek. Drink 3–4 litres of water daily during the trek.

Best Trekking Operators for KGL

If you prefer going with an organized group (recommended for first-timers to KGL), here are some reputed operators: Indiahikes, Trek the Himalayas, Bikat Adventures, and local Kashmiri operators based in Sonamarg. Costs range from ₹15,000–₹22,000 per person for 7 days.

Tips from Trekkers Who Have Done It

• Go in July for flowers, September for clarity. July–August meadows are carpeted in wildflowers. September has clearer skies and autumn tones but colder nights.

• Waterproof everything. Rain can hit without warning at altitude. Keep clothes and electronics in dry bags inside your backpack.

• The Gadsar Pass day is the hardest. Start by 6 AM to give yourself time. Take it slow and stay hydrated.

• Bring a good camera. Phone cameras do not do justice to the lake colours. If you have a wide-angle lens, bring it.

• Leave no trace. Carry all trash back. The KGL route has seen increased littering — be a responsible trekker.

Combine KGL with a Kashmir Trip

Many trekkers combine the Great Lakes trek with a few days of Kashmir sightseeing. A typical plan: 2 days in Srinagar (pre-trek) + 7 days KGL + 2 days post-trek relaxation.
