Day 1: Arrival in Srinagar — Dal Lake & Houseboats

Morning–Afternoon: Arrive & Settle In

Fly into Srinagar's Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport. Your driver (included in all ATARA DMC packages) will pick you up and drive you to your houseboat on Dal Lake (30 minutes from the airport).

Check in, have lunch on the houseboat (most houseboats serve home-cooked Kashmiri meals), and take some time to relax and soak in the views of the Zabarwan hills reflecting in the lake.

Evening: Shikara Ride on Dal Lake (4:30 PM–6:30 PM)

The highlight of Day 1. Board a shikara (traditional wooden boat) for a 1–2 hour ride through the floating gardens, the floating market, and along the boulevard. Watch the sunset paint the Himalayas gold from the middle of the lake. This is a moment you will never forget.

Cost: ₹500–₹1,000 for the shikara (fits 2–4 people). Negotiate before boarding.

Insider tip: Ask your shikara driver to take you to the "Meena Bazaar" floating market. Shop for saffron, dried fruits, and Kashmiri handicrafts right from the boat.

Night: Houseboat Stay

Staying on a houseboat is a quintessential Kashmir experience. These beautifully carved wooden boats have bedrooms, living rooms, and dining areas. Fall asleep to the gentle sound of water lapping against the hull.

Cost: ₹1,500–₹6,000/night depending on category (standard to deluxe).

Day 1 Expenses (per person)

Airport transferIncluded in package
Houseboat (shared)₹1,500–₹3,000
Shikara ride₹500
Meals₹500–₹800
Day 1 Total₹3,000–₹4,800

Day 2: Gulmarg Day Trip — Gondola & Meadows

Morning: Drive to Gulmarg (8:00 AM)

After breakfast, drive from Srinagar to Gulmarg (50 km, approximately 1.5 hours). The drive itself is scenic — winding through rice paddies, pine forests, and small Kashmiri villages with wooden houses.

Mid-Morning: Gulmarg Gondola (10:00 AM–1:00 PM)

The Gulmarg Gondola is one of the highest cable cars in the world. It runs in two phases:

• Phase 1 (Gulmarg to Kongdoori): Takes you to 3,080 meters. Stunning views of the Pir Panjal range. In winter, this area is covered in deep snow. Cost: ₹740/person.

• Phase 2 (Kongdoori to Apharwat Peak): Takes you to 3,950 meters — one of the highest points accessible to tourists. You are literally above the clouds. Jaw-dropping 360-degree views of snow-capped peaks. Cost: ₹920/person.

Tip: Arrive at the Gondola station by 9:30 AM to avoid long queues. Buy tickets online if available to save time.

Afternoon: Explore Gulmarg (1:00 PM–4:00 PM)

Have lunch at one of the restaurants near the Gondola station (try Kashmiri Wazwan or Maggi and Kahwa at a hillside stall for a more rustic experience). Then explore:

• Gulmarg Golf Course — one of the highest golf courses in the world. Even if you do not play golf, the vast green meadows surrounded by mountains are worth a walk.

• Strawberry Valley — a beautiful meadow just a short walk from the main market.

• St. Mary's Church — a charming 100-year-old church set among pine trees.

Evening: Return to Srinagar (4:30 PM)

Drive back to Srinagar. Check into your hotel. Visit the Boulevard Road area for dinner — there are many good restaurants here with Dal Lake views.

Day 2 Expenses (per person)

Transport (private cab to Gulmarg)₹1,200 (shared among group)
Gondola Phase 1 + 2₹1,660
Hotel (Srinagar, shared)₹1,000–₹2,500

Day 3: Pahalgam — Valleys, Rivers & Meadows

Morning: Drive to Pahalgam (8:00 AM)

Drive from Srinagar to Pahalgam (95 km, approximately 2.5 hours). The route passes through Pampore (famous for saffron fields), Awantipora (ancient Hindu ruins), and follows the Lidder River valley — one of the most picturesque drives in India.

Stop at Pampore Saffron Fields: If visiting in October–November, you can see the purple saffron crocus flowers in bloom — a rare and beautiful sight.

Late Morning: Betaab Valley (11:00 AM–1:00 PM)

Named after the Bollywood film "Betaab" (1983) that was shot here, this valley is jaw-droppingly green. A pristine stream flows through the valley floor, surrounded by dense pine and deodar forests. Entry fee is ₹50.

Afternoon: Aru Valley (2:00 PM–4:30 PM)

A 12 km drive from Pahalgam brings you to Aru Valley — a less-crowded, more authentic meadow. This is the starting point for the famous Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar-Marsar treks. Even if you are not trekking, the valley is worth visiting for its unspoiled beauty.

Optional: Try horse riding along the Aru Valley trail (₹500–₹1,500 depending on distance).

Evening: Pahalgam Town & Lidder River

Walk along the Lidder River in the evening. The sound of the rushing mountain river with pine trees on both banks is incredibly peaceful. Visit the local market for walnut wood carvings and dry fruits.

Day 3 Expenses (per person)

Transport (Srinagar to Pahalgam)₹1,500 (shared)
Betaab Valley entry₹50
Aru Valley taxi₹300 (shared)
Hotel (Pahalgam, shared)₹1,200–₹3,000

Day 3 Total₹3,650–₹5,850

Day 4: Sonamarg Day Trip — The Meadow of Gold

Morning: Pahalgam to Srinagar to Sonamarg (7:00 AM)

Start early. Drive from Pahalgam back to Srinagar (2.5 hours), then continue to Sonamarg (80 km, 2.5 hours from Srinagar). Alternatively, take the direct Pahalgam–Sonamarg route (longer but more scenic). The total drive is approximately 4–5 hours with a breakfast stop.

Sonamarg means "Meadow of Gold" and it lives up to its name. At 2,740 meters, you are surrounded by glaciers, alpine flowers, and the Sindh River.

Late Morning: Thajiwas Glacier (11:00 AM–1:30 PM)

The main attraction at Sonamarg is the Thajiwas Glacier — a short trek (3 km) or pony ride from the main market. Even in summer, the glacier retains snow, and you can walk right up to it. The meadow leading to the glacier is dotted with wildflowers from May to September.

Pony ride to glacier: ₹800–₹1,500 (round trip). You can walk it in 45 minutes each way if you prefer trekking.

Afternoon: Sonamarg Viewpoints & Return

Have lunch at one of the dhabas (try trout fish — freshly caught from the Sindh River). Visit the Zero Point viewpoint if roads are open (requires separate permit vehicle). Begin the drive back to Srinagar by 3:00 PM to arrive by 5:30 PM.

Evening: Srinagar Boulevard & Dinner

Last evening at Srinagar. Take a walk along the Boulevard road, enjoy the sunset over Dal Lake, and have dinner at a restaurant with lake views. Visit Lal Chowk for any last-minute shopping.

Day 4 Expenses (per person)

Transport (Pahalgam–Srinagar–Sonamarg–Srinagar)₹1,500 (shared)
Thajiwas Glacier pony ride₹800–₹1,500
Hotel (Srinagar, shared)₹1,000–₹2,500
Meals₹600–₹1,000
Day 4 Total₹3,900–₹6,500

Day 5: Srinagar Local Sightseeing & Departure

Morning: Mughal Gardens (9:00 AM–12:00 PM)

Visit the three famous Mughal-era gardens, all located along the banks of Dal Lake:

• Nishat Bagh (Garden of Delight): The largest Mughal garden in Kashmir, with 12 terraces representing the 12 zodiac signs. Spectacular views of Dal Lake and the Zabarwan mountains.

• Shalimar Bagh (Abode of Love): Built by Emperor Jahangir for his wife Nur Jahan. Beautiful chinar trees, fountains, and flower beds.

• Chashme Shahi (Royal Spring): The smallest but most charming of the three, with a natural spring believed to have medicinal properties.

Entry fee: ₹50–₹100 per garden.

Late Morning: Shankaracharya Temple (Optional)

If time permits, drive up to the ancient Shankaracharya Temple perched on a hilltop. It offers the best panoramic view of Srinagar, Dal Lake, and the surrounding mountains. Built in 200 BC, it is one of the oldest temples in Kashmir.

Note: Phones and cameras may not be allowed inside the temple (security check at the base).

Afternoon: Lal Chowk & Local Markets (12:30 PM–2:00 PM)

Visit the heart of Srinagar — Lal Chowk. Pick up souvenirs: Pashmina shawls (₹1,500–₹15,000+), walnut wood carvings, paper mache boxes, saffron (₹300–₹500 per gram for Grade 1), and dried fruits (almonds, walnuts, apricots).

Bargaining tip: Prices in Lal Chowk are usually inflated by 30–50%. Negotiate confidently but politely. For authentic Pashmina, ask for a "burn test" — real Pashmina smells like burnt hair and leaves no ash.

Departure (3:00 PM onwards)

Head to the airport for your flight home. Srinagar airport is just 30 minutes from the city center. Keep at least 2 hours before your flight for security checks (Srinagar airport has extra security layers).

Pro Tips for Your 5-Day Kashmir Trip

• Start early every day. Kashmir mornings are magical and tourist spots get crowded after 11 AM. Aim to leave by 8 AM.

• Keep a buffer day. If possible, add a 6th day as buffer. Weather can be unpredictable, and roads sometimes close temporarily.

• Carry warm layers. Even in summer, evenings are cold (10–15°C in June). Gulmarg Gondola Phase 2 can be near-freezing.

• Download offline maps. Mobile networks are patchy between Srinagar and Pahalgam/Sonamarg. Download Google Maps offline for the Kashmir region.

• Carry cash. UPI works in Srinagar city, but most places in Pahalgam, Gulmarg, and Sonamarg prefer cash. ATMs are scarce outside Srinagar.

• Try Kahwa everywhere. The saffron-almond-cardamom tea is served fresh everywhere in Kashmir. Each place has its own variation — no two cups taste the same.

Alternative 5-Day Itinerary Options

Option B: Skip Sonamarg, Relax More

If you prefer a slower pace, skip the Sonamarg day trip and instead spend Day 4 exploring Pahalgam at leisure — visit Chandanwari (the starting point of Amarnath Yatra), try river rafting on the Lidder, or simply relax by the river. This is better for families with young children or elderly travelers.

Option C: Honeymoon Itinerary

Replace Sonamarg with a full day on Dal Lake — second shikara ride, spa at a luxury houseboat, shopping at floating market, and dinner on the lake. Add our Honeymoon to Paradise package for special couple experiences.

Yes, 5 days is ideal for covering Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam — the three most popular destinations in Kashmir. If you want to add Sonamarg, you will need to move at a slightly faster pace but it is doable. For a more relaxed trip or to include Ladakh, consider 7–10 days.

What is the best 5-day Kashmir itinerary?

The best 5-day Kashmir itinerary is: Day 1 — Arrive Srinagar, Dal Lake shikara ride, houseboat stay. Day 2 — Gulmarg day trip with Gondola ride. Day 3 — Drive to Pahalgam, visit Betaab Valley and Aru Valley. Day 4 — Sonamarg day trip. Day 5 — Srinagar Mughal Gardens and local sightseeing, depart.

How much does a 5-day Kashmir trip cost?

A 5-day Kashmir trip costs ₹12,000–₹18,000 per person for budget, ₹20,000–₹35,000 for mid-range, and ₹40,000–₹80,000 for luxury travel. This excludes flights. Check our detailed Kashmir trip cost guide for a full breakdown.

What is the best month for a 5-day Kashmir trip?

April to June is the best time for a 5-day Kashmir trip — pleasant weather, all roads open, tulip gardens in bloom (April), and perfect sightseeing conditions. September-October is also excellent with autumn foliage and fewer crowds.

Should I visit Gulmarg or Pahalgam first?

Visit Gulmarg first. It is closer to Srinagar (50 km, 1.5 hours), so it works as an easy Day 2 trip after arrival. Pahalgam (95 km, 2.5 hours) can be done on Day 3 with an overnight stay for a more relaxed experience.
