Description
Ladakh’s Best Kept Secret: Kargil turns the Srinagar-Leh road into a deeper Ladakh journey. Instead of treating Kargil as a transit town, this itinerary spends three nights here and explores the valleys, border villages and cultural routes around it.
The route is built around Suru Valley’s green landscapes and Nun Kun views, Hunderman’s living border history, and the Aryan Valley’s Brokpa villages along the Indus. It ends with the classic Kargil-Leh drive via Mulbekh, Namika La, Fotu La, Lamayuru and Moonland.
District Kargil’s official tourism information describes Kargil as a historic meeting point for trade between Central Asia, China and India, with heritage sites, Buddhist statues, forts, monasteries, war memorials and adventure landscapes spread across the district. Travel tips
This route is easier on acclimatisation than flying straight into Leh, but Kargil and the onward passes are still high-altitude Himalayan terrain. Carry warm layers, sunglasses, medication, and keep buffer time for Zojila road conditions.
