Trekking & Adventure
Kashmir Great Lakes, Tarsar Marsar, Markha Valley — guided Himalayan treks with certified teams
Trekking & Adventure with ATARA
Kashmir and Ladakh have been the backbone of Indian Himalayan trekking for four decades — and rightly so. The Kashmir Great Lakes trek alone takes you past seven alpine lakes above 3,500 m; Tarsar Marsar delivers two of the most photographed turquoise tarns in the country; Markha Valley crosses 5,130-m Kongmaru La between Ladakhi villages.
Our trekking operations are run with certified mountain guides, IFMGA-aligned safety protocols, proper porter ratios (max 25 kg load), camping kit that actually survives above 4,000 m, and permits arranged well in advance. We do not cut corners on safety.
Most treks operate June–September (Kashmir) or July–September (Ladakh). Below we\'ve listed the most popular routes with difficulty ratings. First-timers should consider Tarsar Marsar (moderate) before the Great Lakes (moderate-difficult). Seasoned trekkers can combine adventure routes with 7 day Ladakh or 8 day Ladakh planning.

Who this suits
Perfect for: Experienced weekend hikers ready to step up to multi-day Himalayan trekking; groups of friends (6–14 ideal); photographers chasing alpine landscapes; anyone wanting a physical holiday.
Prerequisites: You should be able to walk 5–8 hours a day carrying a day pack, sleep in tents, handle cold nights. A pre-trek fitness regime is highly recommended. We share a 6-week training plan on booking.
We recommend against: Any trek above 4,000 m for first-timers without prior altitude experience; Markha Valley in shoulder seasons; any high-altitude trek if you have heart or respiratory issues.
Starting prices
Prices are indicative, per person on double sharing, excluding flights. Final quote depends on dates, hotel category and group size.
Best time for Trekking & Adventure
June (early season): Kashmir Great Lakes and Tarsar Marsar open. Snow patches persist on higher passes. Fewer trekkers.
July–August: Peak trekking season in Kashmir and Ladakh. All routes open. Book camping slots 4–6 weeks ahead.
September: Our favourite month. Crystal clear skies, golden grasses, all passes crossable, temperatures 5–20°C. Last weeks of the season.
October–May: High-altitude treks closed. Select winter options (Chadar trek on the frozen Zanskar, Jan–Feb) operate as specialist expeditions.
