Easy Treks (Perfect for Beginners & Families)

1. Thajiwas Glacier Trek, Sonamarg

Duration: 3–4 hours (round trip) | Distance: 6 km | Best for: Families, first-timers, anyone visiting Sonamarg

The easiest "trek" in Kashmir — more of a nature walk. Start from Sonamarg market, walk along a well-marked trail through meadows to the Thajiwas Glacier. Even in summer, you will find snow here. Ponies are available (₹800–₹1,500) if you prefer not to walk. The wildflower meadows en route are spectacular in July–August.

Include in: Your 5-day Kashmir itinerary on the Sonamarg day.

2. Doodhpathri Meadow Walk

Duration: 2–3 hours | Distance: 4 km | Best for: Families, photography enthusiasts

Doodhpathri ("Valley of Milk") is one of Kashmir's best-kept secrets. A gentle walk through pine forests leads to vast meadows with a milky-white stream running through. Very few tourists make it here, so you often have the entire meadow to yourself. Located 42 km from Srinagar.

3. Yusmarg to Doodh Ganga Valley

Duration: 4–5 hours | Distance: 7 km | Best for: Nature lovers, picnic groups

Yusmarg (47 km from Srinagar) is another offbeat destination. The trek follows the Doodh Ganga river through pine forests to a beautiful meadow. The trail is flat and shaded — perfect for a hot summer day. You can extend the walk to Nilnag Lake (a small, serene alpine lake).

4. Aru Valley to Lidderwat

Duration: 6–7 hours | Distance: 12 km | Best for: Day hikers wanting a moderate challenge

Starting from Aru Valley (12 km from Pahalgam), this trail follows the Lidder River through dense forests to the shepherd camp of Lidderwat. The scenery is stunning — waterfalls, river crossings, and mountain views. This is also the starting point for the Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar Marsar treks, so you get a preview of those epic routes.

Moderate Treks (Some Experience Required)

5. Tulian Lake Trek, Pahalgam

Duration: 2 days (1 night camping) | Distance: 16 km | Altitude: 3,353 m

A hidden gem above Pahalgam. The trek ascends steeply from Baisaran meadow to Tulian Lake — a frozen alpine lake at 3,353 m. The lake remains partially frozen until July. The views from the ridge above the lake extend across the entire Pahalgam valley. Camp at Baisaran meadow on Day 1, reach the lake on Day 2, and return.

6. Gurez Valley Trek

Duration: 2–3 days | Distance: 25 km | Best for: Offbeat explorers

Gurez Valley (near the Line of Control) is one of the most remote and beautiful valleys in Kashmir. The trek takes you through Habba Khatoon peak views, Dawar village, and along the Kishanganga River. You need a special permit (arranged at Bandipora). The valley has limited tourism infrastructure — which is exactly what makes it special.

7. Tarsar Marsar Trek

Duration: 6 days | Distance: 48 km | Altitude: 3,900 m

Often called the "younger sibling" of the Great Lakes trek, Tarsar Marsar is equally stunning but slightly easier. You visit two magnificent lakes — Tarsar (deep blue, surrounded by green meadows) and Marsar (darker, more remote, backed by snowfields). The Sundersar Pass crossing offers incredible views. Starting point: Aru Valley, Pahalgam.

8. Naranag to Gangabal Lake

Duration: 3–4 days | Distance: 34 km | Altitude: 3,570 m

This trek takes you to the sacred Gangabal Lake at the foot of Mt. Harmukh (5,142 m). It is the last section of the Kashmir Great Lakes trek done in reverse. Starting from the ancient temple ruins at Naranag, the trail climbs through forests to the twin lakes of Gangabal and Nundkol. A shorter alternative to the full 7-day KGL.

Hard Treks (Experienced Trekkers Only)

9. Kashmir Great Lakes Trek

Duration: 7 days | Distance: 72 km | Altitude: 4,180 m

The crown jewel of Kashmir trekking. Seven alpine lakes, three high passes, wildflower meadows, and some of the most spectacular scenery in the Himalayas. Read our complete Kashmir Great Lakes trek guide for the full day-by-day itinerary, costs, and preparation tips.

10. Kolahoi Glacier Trek

Duration: 4–5 days | Distance: 40 km | Altitude: 3,800 m

Kolahoi is Kashmir's largest glacier and the source of the Lidder River. The trek from Aru Valley through Lidderwat to the glacier base camp is one of the most rewarding in Kashmir. The glacier itself is massive — a wall of ice surrounded by towering peaks. The approach through old-growth forests is magical.

11. Warwan Valley Crossing

Duration: 7–8 days | Distance: 80 km | Altitude: 4,200 m

One of the most challenging and remote treks in Kashmir. The route crosses from the Kashmir Valley to the Warwan Valley over the Sona Pani pass. Very few trekkers attempt this — you will not see another group for days. Requires a guide, full camping gear, and excellent fitness.

12. Kounsarnag Lake Trek

Duration: 3 days | Distance: 28 km | Altitude: 3,710 m

Kounsarnag is one of Kashmir's most sacred and remote lakes. Located in the Pir Panjal range, the trek starts from Aharbal Waterfall and climbs steeply to the lake at 3,710 m. The lake is massive — 600m long and 200m wide — surrounded by snow peaks. A challenging trek due to the steep ascent and altitude.

How to Prepare for Trekking in Kashmir

• Fitness: Start training 6–8 weeks before. Running, stair climbing, and squats are essential.

• Acclimatize: Spend a day in Srinagar or Pahalgam before starting any high-altitude trek.

• Hire a guide: Always recommended for treks above 3,000 m. Local Gujjar guides know the trails intimately.

• Permit: Some treks (KGL, Kounsarnag) require permits. Your trekking operator handles this.

• Water: Carry purification tablets. Stream water is generally safe at higher altitudes but treat it to be sure.

• Weather: Carry rain gear regardless of forecast. Mountain weather is unpredictable.

• Leave No Trace: Carry all trash back. Kashmir's trekking trails are pristine — help keep them that way.
