Why visit Sonamarg?
Sonamarg — literally "Meadow of Gold" — sits where the Sindh River carves its way through one of Kashmir\'s most dramatic alpine valleys. At 2,800 metres it\'s the last major stop on the Srinagar–Leh highway before the Zojila Pass, and in summer it\'s a gateway to some of the finest trekking in India: the Kashmir Great Lakes, Vishansar, Krishansar and the climb to Thajiwas Glacier.
Unlike Gulmarg or Pahalgam, Sonamarg empties out in winter — the entire valley is usually snowed in from late November through early April, and NH-1 closes at Zojila. The best months are May through September, when wild iris and buttercup carpet the meadows and the air stays a crisp 10–20°C even at midday.
Most visitors arrive as a day trip from Srinagar, but if you can spare a night, the early-morning light on the Thajiwas Glacier is worth the extra planning. Our Kashmir packages that include Sonamarg usually pair it with a shikara night on Dal Lake.
Must-see places in Sonamarg
Thajiwas Glacier
The signature short trek or pony outing from Sonamarg. Read the Thajiwas Glacier guide for route, timing and cost planning.
Zojila Pass & Baltal
A scenic drive up to 3,528 m on NH-1 — the gateway to Ladakh. Baltal is also the shorter (14 km) Amarnath Yatra route, open July–August.
Vishansar & Krishansar Lakes
Day 2 of the legendary Kashmir Great Lakes Trek starts from Sonamarg. These twin alpine lakes at 3,710 m are among the most photographed spots in Kashmir.
Nilagrad River
A red-tinted tributary of the Sindh, believed by locals to have medicinal properties. Easy 20-minute walk from the main road, good for a quiet picnic.
Sindh River Rafting
Grade II–III rafting on the Sindh runs May to early September. Generally suitable for families with children 8+ when water levels and operator checks are favourable. ATARA can pre-book raft slots at the main put-in.
Baltal Valley
A grassy valley 15 km beyond Sonamarg, used as an advance trekking base and Amarnath Yatra camp. Quieter than Sonamarg proper and has a few riverside tented stays.
Best time to visit Sonamarg
Late Spring (May)
Meadows just turning green, streams in full flow, Zojila usually re-opens. Chilly mornings — pack fleece.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Peak season. Wildflowers at their best, trekking passes open, Amarnath Yatra traffic in July.
Early Autumn (Sep)
Ideal month — fewer crowds, clear skies, golden meadows. Last window before snow.
Winter (Nov–Apr)
Valley snowed in; Zojila closed; hotels shut. Day trips possible from Srinagar to see snow until heavy storms.
How to reach Sonamarg
From Srinagar: 80 km / ~2.5 hours on NH-1. The road follows the Sindh River and passes through Kangan and Kullan — one of the prettiest drives in Kashmir. ATARA round-trip by car costs approximately ₹3,500–4,500 as a day trip.
From Srinagar Airport (SXR): ~85 km, 3 hrs direct. Included in Kashmir packages featuring Sonamarg.
Onward to Ladakh: Sonamarg is the last Kashmir town before Zojila (3,528 m) and Drass — the road to Kargil and Leh. Typically open mid-May to late October. ATARA offers the classic 2-day Srinagar–Leh drive with a Kargil overnight.
