About Pahalgam

Why visit Pahalgam?

Pahalgam sits at the confluence of the Lidder and Sheshnag rivers, cradled by pine-forested slopes that glow emerald in summer and turn silver under snow each winter. Known as the Valley of Shepherds, it has been Kashmir\'s most beloved hill retreat since the British settled here in the late 1800s.

The town itself is a strolling base: saffron-robed sadhus on their way to Amarnath, trout fishermen casting into the Lidder, pony wallahs calling out to visitors headed for Baisaran meadow. But the real Pahalgam lies in the three valleys that fan out from town — Betaab (Bollywood-famous), Aru (a village at the start of the Kolahoi Glacier trek) and Chandanwari (base of the Amarnath Yatra, snow-bridged for most of the year).

For most travellers, two to three nights in Pahalgam strike the right balance. It\'s also one of the rare Kashmir destinations where winter is genuinely magical — frozen waterfalls, quiet lanes, and rates a third of summer\'s.

Getting there

How to reach Pahalgam

From Srinagar: 95 km / ~3 hours via Anantnag. The road passes through saffron fields near Pampore — worth a photo stop in October. Our ATARA drivers combine the transfer with Awantipora ruins or a short stop at Martand Sun Temple.

From Srinagar Airport (SXR): ~95 km, 3 hrs direct. Included in every Kashmir package with a Pahalgam night.

Onward: Pahalgam is a terminus — no onward road to Ladakh or Jammu from here. To continue, return to Srinagar (for Gulmarg/Sonamarg/Leh) or descend via Anantnag back to the NH-44.

Frequently asked

Pahalgam — FAQ

2 nights is the sweet spot — one day for Betaab + Aru + Chandanwari (a combined "three-valley" day trip by cab), another for Baisaran meadow and unstructured river walks. Add a day if you're trekking or rafting.

Yes, and it's underrated. The town road stays cleared most winters, though Betaab/Aru/Chandanwari often close after heavy snow. Hotels run half price. Pack heavy woollens — nights drop to –5°C.

The annual Hindu pilgrimage to Amarnath Cave (3,888 m) runs roughly 1 July to 15 August. Chandanwari is the traditional base. Registration via the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board website is mandatory for yatris; casual tourists can visit Chandanwari year-round without permits.

Very. It's one of the most family-friendly destinations in Kashmir — walkable town, gentle rafting, short pony rides, and plenty of open meadows. Altitude at 2,740 m is comfortable for all ages.

Yes. Classic 5-day Kashmir itineraries cover Srinagar (2N) + Gulmarg (1N) + Pahalgam (2N). They sit on opposite sides of the valley, so always return to Srinagar as the hub.

Baisaran pony ride pricing depends on route, waiting time and season. See the Pahalgam pony ride and union taxi guide, then verify the current board at the local stand.
