Where to Rent

Srinagar: Multiple rental shops on Boulevard Road near Dal Gate. Book 2+ weeks in advance for peak season (July–August).

Leh: Fort Road and Changspa Road have dozens of rental shops. Larger selection than Srinagar.

Manali: Mall Road and Old Manali have many options.

What to check: Tyre condition, chain tension, brake pads, clutch cable, headlight, horn. Ask for a spare clutch cable and tube. Take photos/video of the bike before riding off.

Altitude Sickness: The Real Danger

This is the single biggest risk on a Ladakh bike trip. At 5,000+ metres, oxygen levels are 50% lower than sea level. Symptoms include headache, nausea, breathlessness, and dizziness.

Prevention:

Acclimatize in Leh for 24+ hours before riding to Khardung La or Pangong.

Hydrate aggressively — 3–4 litres of water per day. Dehydration accelerates AMS.

No alcohol for the first 48 hours at altitude.

Diamox: Consult your doctor about taking Acetazolamide (125mg twice daily) starting 1 day before reaching Leh.

Descend immediately if symptoms worsen. Altitude sickness can be fatal if ignored.

Garlic soup — locals swear by it. Available at every dhaba in Ladakh.

Road Conditions & Fuel Strategy

Srinagar-Leh route: Generally good with one rough section at Zoji La. Fuel available at Srinagar, Sonamarg, Kargil, Khalsi, Leh.

Manali-Leh route: Rougher overall. Water crossings at Rohtang and between Jispa and Sarchu. Fuel at Manali, Tandi (last pump before Leh — 365 km gap!), and Karu (30 km before Leh). Carry a 10-litre jerry can if going via Manali.

Within Ladakh: Leh has multiple fuel stations. There are pumps at Diskit (Nubra) and Karu. No fuel at Pangong, Tso Moriri, or Hanle — plan accordingly.

MonthRatingNotes
May (late)⭐⭐⭐Roads just opening, possible delays, snow on passes — adventurous
June⭐⭐⭐⭐Roads open, manageable traffic, some water crossings
July⭐⭐⭐Monsoon affects Manali route, Srinagar route less impacted

Safety Tips

Never ride alone on the Manali-Leh route. Ride in a group of 3+ bikes.

Start early. Aim to reach your destination by 3 PM. Mountain weather deteriorates in the afternoon.

Respect the altitude. Your bike loses 30–40% power above 4,000m. Ride in lower gears on steep climbs.

Watch for water crossings. Ride through slowly in first gear. Do not stop in the middle.

Keep right on blind corners. Trucks and buses will be on the other side.

Carry cash. UPI and cards do not work reliably outside Leh city.
