Description

The Alpine Escape is our most popular Ladakh itinerary — a perfectly balanced 5-night journey that gives you enough time to soak in each destination without rushing. Unlike shorter packages, this tour includes an overnight stay at Pangong Lake, allowing you to witness the lake’s legendary colour shifts at both sunset and sunrise.

Beginning with acclimatization in Leh and the Sham Valley heritage circuit, the trip builds toward the dramatic Khardung La crossing into Nubra Valley. From the sand dunes and Bactrian camels of Hunder, you travel through the remote Shyok Valley to reach Pangong Tso — a crystalline expanse of blue that stretches 133 km into China.

The return journey on Day 5 is a cultural highlight in itself: crossing Chang La Pass (5,486 m) before visiting Hemis Gompa — the largest Buddhist monastery in Ladakh — the stunning Thiksey Monastery, Shey Palace, and the famous 3 Idiots Rancho School. This tour strikes the ideal balance between adventure, culture, and natural beauty.

Itinerary

The Alpine Escape: Ladakh
Duration: 05 Nights | 06 Days
Destinations Covered: Leh, Sham Valley, Khardung La, Nubra Valley & Pangong Lake
Best Time: April – October
Package Validity: April – September 2026

Arrive at Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport — quite possibly one of the most sensational flights in the world. On a clear morning, you can spot the distant peaks of K2, Nanga Parbat, and Gasherbrum from one side of the aircraft, while the majestic Nun Kun massif appears close enough to touch on the other.

Upon arrival our representative will greet you and transfer you to your hotel. The entire day is dedicated to rest and acclimatization — this is crucial as Leh sits at approximately 3,500 metres (11,500 ft) above sea level. Drink plenty of water, avoid heavy meals, and take it easy. A welcome tea or coffee awaits you at the hotel.

Dinner & Overnight Stay in Leh

After breakfast we drive towards Sham Valley — the gentler, lower-altitude region of Ladakh. Our first stop is the Hall of Fame (closed on Mondays), a museum constructed by the Indian Army near Leh that every visitor should experience.

Continue to Gurudwara Patthar Sahib, nestled at 3,600 metres and built in memory of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. A short 4 km drive takes us to Magnetic Hill, which appears to defy the laws of gravity as vehicles seem to roll uphill on their own.

Driving forward, just before Nimmu Village, we reach the famous Confluence of Two Rivers — the Indus River flowing from Tibet on the left and the Zanskar River from Zanskar Valley on the right. The Zanskar is famous for the legendary Chadar Trek during winter.

Later we drive back to Leh. In the evening, explore Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa & Leh Market at your leisure.

Dinner & Overnight Stay in Leh

After breakfast we embark on the most thrilling drive of the trip — the road to Nubra Valley over Khardung La, one of the highest motorable passes in the world at 5,602 metres (18,390 ft), approximately 39 km from Leh.

From the pass, you can see all the way south over the Indus Valley to the seemingly endless peaks and ridges of the Zanskar range, and north to the giants of the Saser massif. The views are truly breathtaking.

Nubra Valley is popularly known as Ldumra or “the valley of flowers.” Situated between the Karakoram and Ladakh ranges at an average altitude of 10,000 ft, it offers landscapes unlike anywhere else on earth. Upon arrival we check in at our camp or hotel in Hunder.

In the evening, walk through the tiny villages to see how the locals live in this remote part of the world.

Dinner & Overnight Stay in Nubra Valley

An early breakfast and we check out, heading first to Hunder for a chance to ride a Bactrian camel (double-humped) across the surreal sand dunes of this high-altitude desert — snow-capped mountains forming the backdrop. Between Hunder and Diskit, the sand dunes beside the road create an almost Rajasthani landscape, yet rocky Ladakhi mountains tower immediately to the left.

Stop at Diskit, the headquarters of Nubra Valley, famous for its 515-year-old Buddhist Monastery perched magnificently on a hilltop overlooking the entire valley.

We then drive towards Pangong Tso via the Agham & Shyok Valley route. After crossing through Durbuk & Tangtse and several small Changthang villages, you’ll catch your first glimpse of Pangong Lake at 14,000 feet (4,267 m).

This famous blue brackish lake is 5–6 km wide and over 133 km long, with half extending into China. After the success of 3 Idiots, this beautiful natural location has attracted tourists from all over the world. Upon arrival we check in at our camp near Pangong Lake.

Dinner & Overnight Stay at Pangong Lake

Morning at leisure to soak in the beauty of Pangong Lake at sunrise — the water shifts through shades of turquoise, azure, and deep blue as the light changes. After breakfast, we drive back to Leh via Chang La Pass (5,486 m).

En route we visit some of Ladakh’s most iconic cultural sites:
  • Hemis Gompa — the largest monastic foundation of the Drukpa Kagyu Order of Tibetan Buddhism, home to priceless thangkas and gold statues
  • Thiksey Monastery — an impressive 12-storey complex rising tier upon tier on a hill above the village, often compared to the Potala Palace in Lhasa
  • Shey Palace — the ancient capital of Ladakh with a large copper and gold Buddha statue
  • 3 Idiots Rancho School — the Druk White Lotus School, made famous by the Bollywood blockbuster
After visiting these landmarks we drive back to Leh.

Dinner & Overnight Stay in Leh

End of the tour! We ensure a comfortable and timely transfer to Leh Airport to board your flight for your onward destination. We thank you for travelling with ATARA DMC and hope to welcome you back soon.

Please reach the airport at least 2 hours before your scheduled flight.

Travel tips

Carry your passport and necessary permits at all times if you are a foreign traveller. Due to Ladakh’s high altitude, always carry adequate warm woollen clothing even during summer months, as temperatures can drop suddenly at night — especially at Pangong Lake where it reaches 0–5°C overnight.

Carry all essential medications including those for altitude sickness, as medical facilities are limited in remote areas. Prepaid mobile SIM cards from outside Ladakh do not work in the region — only post-paid connections (BSNL, Airtel, Jio) function properly.

Avoid photographing army camps, military convoys, and restricted areas for security reasons. On departure, reach Leh Airport at least 2 hours prior to your scheduled flight.

“Staying overnight at Pangong was the best decision. The sunrise over the lake was magical — colours I’ve never seen before. ATARA DMC’s camp had warm blankets and great food even at 14,000 ft!”

Vikram Singh

“Thiksey Monastery absolutely blew us away — it looks like a mini Potala Palace. The kids loved the camel ride at Nubra. This 6-day itinerary is the sweet spot — not too rushed, not too long.”

Ananya Kapoor

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

The Alpine Escape adds an overnight stay at Pangong Lake instead of a rushed day visit. You also get a dedicated day (Day 5) to visit Hemis Monastery, Thiksey Monastery, Shey Palace, and the famous 3 Idiots Rancho School on your return drive from Pangong to Leh via Chang La Pass.

Absolutely. Staying overnight at Pangong lets you experience the lake at sunset and sunrise when the colours are most dramatic. The star-gazing at 14,000 ft with zero light pollution is unforgettable. Campsites near the lake offer heated tents with basic but comfortable facilities.

Hemis Gompa is the largest monastic foundation of the Drukpa Kagyu Order and houses gold statues, thangkas, and a rich collection of Buddhist artifacts. Thiksey Monastery is an impressive 12-storey complex that resembles the Potala Palace in Lhasa, with a stunning 15-metre Maitreya Buddha statue.

Even in summer (June–August), Pangong Lake temperatures drop to 0–5°C at night. Camps provide heavy blankets and some have room heaters. Carry warm layers, a good jacket, and thermal innerwear.

The ‘3 Idiots Rancho School’ is Druk White Lotus School near Shey, used as a filming location for the Bollywood blockbuster 3 Idiots. It is a real functioning school built with sustainable architecture. Visitors can view the exterior and campus grounds.
