Description

The Soul of Ladakh takes you deep into the Changthang plateau — the vast, sparsely inhabited highland that most tourists never see. After the classic Nubra-Turtuk-Pangong circuit, this tour veers south into one of the most remote regions of the Indian subcontinent.

Hanle, at 4,500 metres, is home to the Indian Astronomical Observatory and is one of the world’s finest dark sky reserves. On a clear night, the Milky Way blazes overhead with a clarity that is impossible to experience anywhere near a city. The journey continues through the Changthang wilderness — home to nomadic Changpa herders and their prized pashmina goats — past Tso Kar (the White Salt Lake) and over Tanglang La Pass back to Leh.

This is an off-beat, adventure-focused itinerary for travellers who have already seen Kashmir and want to experience Ladakh’s wild, untouched interior.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Hanle is a remote village in the Changthang plateau, home to the Indian Astronomical Observatory and one of the world’s best dark sky reserves. Stargazing here is an extraordinary experience with virtually zero light pollution.

Tso Kar is a high-altitude salt lake. The name means White Lake, referring to white salt deposits on its shores. It is a breeding ground for migratory birds. Changpa nomads graze their pashmina goat herds nearby.

Very limited. Only BSNL post-paid may work intermittently. Inform family before leaving Pangong that you may be unreachable for 24-48 hours.

Hanle is at approximately 4,500 metres (14,764 ft). The oxygen cylinder covers Days 3-7, ensuring safety throughout the high-altitude circuit.

Due to the extreme altitude (4,500m+) and remote locations with limited medical facilities, this tour is recommended for fit adults and older teenagers. For families with young children, consider the Enchanting Ladakh Escape instead.
