Description

Ladakh Above & Beyond takes you to heights that few tours dare to reach. After the classic circuit of Sham Valley, Nubra, Turtuk, and Pangong, this tour turns east into the remote Hanle region — home to India’s highest astronomical observatory and some of the darkest, clearest skies in Asia.

Two nights in Hanle give you time to witness a canopy of stars that most people only see in photographs, then attempt the breathtaking drive to Umling La Pass (19,024 ft) — officially the highest motorable road in the world, surpassing even Bolivia’s Yungas Road. The pass was opened in 2021 and remains one of the most exclusive driving experiences on Earth.

This is the ultimate tour for adventure seekers, sky watchers, and those who want to push the limits of high-altitude travel.

Rajat Malhotra

Umling La Trip, July 2025

“Standing at Umling La Pass was surreal — the road just keeps climbing until there is nothing around you except mountains and sky. Our driver from ATARA was experienced and calm, which really mattered at that altitude.”

Priya Nambiar

Astrophotography Tour, August 2025

“The night sky at Hanle is unlike anything I have ever seen. The Milky Way was bright enough to cast shadows. Two nights there meant I got plenty of time for astrophotography. ATARA arranged everything including special area permits.”

Anmol Kapoor

Adventure Trip, June 2025

“This tour has it all — high passes, gorgeous lakes, remote desert camps, stargazing, and the thrill of the highest road in the world. Worth every rupee. Oxygen support from Day 3 made the altitude manageable.”
