Why visit Nubra Valley?
Nubra Valley is Ladakh\'s most unexpected landscape — a high-altitude cold desert where white sand dunes meet the confluence of the Shyok and Nubra rivers, all in the shadow of 7,000-metre Karakoram peaks. The valley sits at a kinder 3,050 m (lower than Leh), so it\'s also where most travellers finally sleep without a headache.
Every Nubra trip begins with the drive over Khardung La (5,359 m), one of the world\'s highest motorable passes. What makes Nubra memorable is the contrast: moonscape on the way up, green willow groves and apricot orchards on the way down. At Hunder you can ride the two-humped Bactrian camels — descendants of Silk Route caravans — across actual sand dunes at 3,000 m.
North of Hunder, the road continues another 90 km to Turtuk, a former Baltistan village that only opened to tourists in 2010 — a cultural world apart from the rest of Ladakh. ATARA packages to Nubra typically allow 2 nights to cover Diskit, Hunder and Turtuk without rushing.
Must-see places in Nubra Valley
Diskit Monastery & Maitreya Buddha
Nubra's oldest and largest gompa (14th century), topped by a 32-metre Maitreya Buddha facing down the valley. Morning prayers begin around 6:30 am — arrive early.
Hunder Sand Dunes & Bactrian Camels
White sand dunes fringed by the Shyok River. Camel rides on the two-humped Bactrians (descendants of Silk Route caravans) cost ₹400–500 for a 20-minute circuit.
Turtuk Village
90 km beyond Hunder — a Balti village only opened to tourists in 2010. Apricot orchards, Balti food, a different language and architecture. Worth a 1-night stay.
Panamik Hot Springs
Natural sulphur hot springs 150 km from Leh, believed medicinal. Small bath complex; peaceful mountain setting. Easy to combine with Diskit on a full day.
Ensa & Samstanling Monasteries
Two lesser-visited gompas — Ensa on a rocky perch above Panamik, Samstanling at Sumur. Quieter than Diskit; lovely for sunrise.
Yarab Tso Lake
A hidden sacred lake near Sumur, reached by a short 20-minute walk. Locals ask that you don't bathe here. Mirror-still mornings.
Best time to visit Nubra Valley
Late Spring (May)
Khardung La re-opens; apricot bloom in Turtuk. Cool nights, warm days.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Peak season. All roads open. Turtuk fruit harvest in August.
Autumn (Sep)
Poplar trees golden, thin crowds, excellent photography. Last month before passes close.
Winter (Oct–Apr)
Khardung La usually closed by heavy snow; Nubra itself milder but inaccessible.
How to reach Nubra Valley
From Leh: 150 km / ~5 hours via Khardung La (5,359 m). Shared SUVs and private cabs both run daily in season. Our ATARA Ladakh packages include this transfer.
Inner Line Permit (ILP): Mandatory for both Indian and foreign nationals. ATARA arranges ILPs in Leh before departure — fee around ₹500, valid for Nubra + Turtuk.
Acclimatise first: Do not travel to Nubra on your day of arrival in Leh. Spend minimum 2 nights in Leh first (3,524 m) to adjust before crossing Khardung La at 5,359 m.

Nubra Valley — FAQ
2 nights is ideal. Day 1: Leh → Khardung La → Diskit → Hunder (overnight). Day 2: Hunder → Turtuk and back (overnight Hunder). Day 3 return to Leh. Rushing it in one night means missing Turtuk.
Yes. Bactrian camel rides at Hunder sand dunes cost around ₹400–500 for a 20-minute loop. They're gentle and suitable for children.
Yes — Turtuk is beyond the Inner Line. Your ILP from Leh should cover Turtuk if specified when applying. ATARA arranges this as a single permit covering the whole Nubra + Turtuk route.
Nubra itself (3,050 m) is lower than Leh and easier to sleep in — but getting there means crossing Khardung La at 5,359 m. Acclimatise in Leh first, hydrate, avoid alcohol on the crossing day.
Hunder — closer to the sand dunes, better camps and guesthouses, and on the way to Turtuk. Diskit is better as a stop for the monastery than an overnight.
Camp and hotel meals are generally Indian + basic Tibetan (thukpa, momos). Turtuk has distinctive Balti food — apricot-based dishes, Balti bread. Carry a few snacks for the road.
