Why visit Pangong Lake?
Pangong Tso is probably the most photographed lake in India — a 134-km-long saline sliver at 4,350 m that turns three different shades of blue before your eyes as the sun moves. Roughly 40% of the lake lies in India; the rest is in Tibet. Most tourists see only the first 7 km near Spangmik, which is more than enough for a jaw-dropping day.
The classic Pangong trip is a 2-day loop from Leh via Chang La (5,360 m, the third-highest motorable pass in the world), overnight in the tented camps at Spangmik or Lukung, and back via the same route. More adventurous itineraries continue south to Hanle or Tso Moriri — but the road conditions are serious.
Do not underestimate the altitude here. At 4,350 m with no trees and frequent wind, Pangong is significantly tougher on the body than Leh or Nubra. Acclimatise properly before you go, skip alcohol, and consider an early departure so you descend by evening.
Must-see places in Pangong Lake
Spangmik Shore
The first Indian village along Pangong, and where most camps cluster. Morning light here is extraordinary — waters turn from navy to turquoise in minutes.
Chang La Pass
At 5,360 m, the world's third-highest motorable pass. Army-run tea stall at the top. Do not linger — altitude hits hard, keep it to 10-15 minutes.
Merak & Man Village
7 km beyond Spangmik — a quieter southern shore stretch. Fewer camps, better for solitude. Road turns rough beyond Merak.
"3 Idiots" Film Spot
The yellow scooter bench and signposts mark the spot where the Bollywood film's climax was shot. Great photo op; you will not be alone there.
Frozen Pangong (Jan–Feb)
In deep winter Pangong freezes metres thick — you can walk on it. Specialised tours only; expect –20°C temperatures and very limited lodging.
Birdlife: Black-necked Cranes
The marshes around southern Pangong are a summer nesting ground for India's only breeding population of black-necked cranes. Early morning quiet walks.
Best time to visit Pangong Lake
Late Spring (May)
Chang La opens; ice breaks up. Cold but dramatic contrast of snow and blue water.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Peak season. All camps open. Pleasant days (12–20°C) but windy afternoons.
Autumn (Sep)
Perfect clarity, mirror-still mornings. Camps start closing mid-September.
Winter (Oct–Apr)
Camps closed. Special frozen-lake tours run Jan–Feb — very harsh, basic homestays only.
How to reach Pangong Lake
From Leh: 160 km / ~5 hours via Chang La. The road has been paved extensively in recent years but weather can damage it overnight. Early start (before 7 am) strongly recommended.
Inner Line Permit (ILP): Mandatory. ATARA arranges in Leh; ₹500 fee.
Acclimatise first: Minimum 2 nights in Leh before attempting Pangong. Day-trip from Leh is technically possible but genuinely uncomfortable — most travellers overnight at Spangmik or Lukung.

Pangong Lake — FAQ
Yes — most travellers stay one night. Arrive by afternoon, watch sunset, catch sunrise, return to Leh. For keener photographers, 2 nights allows a full day of walking the shore.
Technically yes, practically no — water temperature is near freezing year-round and altitude makes even wading dangerous. The lake is also considered sacred; respect local sensibilities.
Only tented camps and a couple of basic homestays. Attached bathroom luxury tents are available at Spangmik and Lukung — ATARA packages include these. No concrete hotels near the lake.
Only with a gentle itinerary — minimum 3 nights in Leh first, doctor clearance, Diamox optional. 4,350 m is high even for healthy adults; consult your doctor if you have heart, lung, or blood pressure conditions.
Patchy BSNL / Jio post-paid signal only (pre-paid SIMs from outside J&K do not work in Ladakh). Most camps have no electricity after 10 pm. Inform family before departure.
Tso Moriri is quieter, higher (4,522 m), harder to reach and in our view more beautiful. Pangong is more accessible and iconic. Keen travellers do both — see our Tso Moriri guide.
