Leh-Ladakh Bike Trips
Manali-Leh, Srinagar-Leh, Khardung La, Umling La — self-ride and backed tours with Himalayans, Royal Enfields and full support
Leh-Ladakh Bike Trips with ATARA
A Ladakh bike trip is one of the defining road journeys in India — over 2,000 km of riding across six passes above 4,500 m, through cold desert, along the world\'s highest motorable road (Umling La at 5,883 m), and among landscapes that look borrowed from Mars.
We run two formats: self-ride with full ground support (a mechanic-driven backup vehicle carries luggage, parts, fuel reserves and an oxygen cylinder; you ride your rental bike at your pace), and passenger tours (seasoned local riders take you as pillion). Both include Royal Enfield Classic 350 / Himalayan 450 / Himalayan 411 rental options with genuine insurance and pre-trip servicing.
The Manali–Leh route is typically open mid-May to early October; Srinagar–Leh opens slightly earlier (late April) when Zojila is cleared. Monsoon months (July–August) bring landslides — we build buffer days into those itineraries.

Who this suits
Perfect for: Intermediate riders who have done multi-day highway trips and can handle gravel, water crossings, altitude; groups of 4–10 friends; solo travellers ready to join fixed-departure batches.
Prerequisites: Valid motorcycle license (2+ years preferred); comfortable on 350cc+ bikes for 6–8 hours a day; no heart/respiratory conditions.
Not for: First-time bikers, anyone who hasn\'t ridden a geared bike for 500+ km at a stretch. The altitude alone punishes the unprepared — please ride a lesser Himalayan route first.
Starting prices
Prices are indicative, per person on double sharing, excluding flights. Final quote depends on dates, hotel category and group size.
Best time for Leh-Ladakh Bike Trips
Late May–June: Routes just open. Rohtang, Zojila and Baralacha La clear. Snow walls on high passes, cold mornings. Our pick for clearest riding.
July–August: Monsoon season — some risk of landslides on Manali–Leh; Srinagar–Leh typically unaffected. Builds in flex days.
September: Top month — clear skies, dry trails, stable weather. All passes open. Book 2+ months ahead.
Early October: Last window before Rohtang and Baralacha close. Quieter roads, crisp riding.

Leh-Ladakh Bike Trips — FAQ
Himalayan 450 / 411 — wins on broken roads, water crossings, long-travel suspension. Classic 350 — nostalgic, comfortable on highway, less capable off-tar. For a full Ladakh loop we recommend the Himalayan.
Probably yes for the Manali–Leh highway route with full support. For off-tar sections (Umling La approach, Hanle loops), you'd ideally want a prior Himalayan trip under your belt.
Real risk at Khardung La (5,359 m), Chang La (5,360 m), Umling La (5,883 m). We build minimum 2 acclimatisation days in Leh, carry oxygen in backup, and turn back at the first sign of HACE/HAPE symptoms. No exceptions.
The backup Tempo carries a trained mechanic with spare parts (tubes, cables, sprockets, brake pads, oil). For serious issues we swap to a backup bike (carried for groups 6+) or tow to the next town.
Yes — pillion tours are popular with couples or riders who prefer not to ride the full distance themselves. Pillion price is typically 70% of rider price.
We reroute — there are always alternative routes between Leh and Nubra / Pangong. If Zojila or Baralacha closes multi-day, we rearrange accommodation. No out-of-pocket costs for weather reroutes.
