Why visit Srinagar?
Srinagar is the beating heart of Kashmir — a thousand-year-old city strung along the Jhelum River where wooden houseboats drift on Dal Lake, floating vegetable markets open at dawn, and Mughal-era gardens terrace up the mountainsides. For most travellers Srinagar is the gateway to the valley, and it deserves at least two full days of your itinerary.
What makes Srinagar unusual among Indian cities is how little you need to hurry. Morning shikara rides glide past lotus beds and floating kitchens. Afternoons are for Chashme Shahi and Nishat Bagh, the Mughal pleasure gardens laid out by Emperor Jahangir. Evenings belong to the Old City — the silver domes of Jamia Masjid, the handicraft bazaars of Lal Chowk, and rogan josh simmered slowly in copper pots at a Wazwan dinner.
Srinagar is also the logistical hub of Kashmir: every road trip to Gulmarg (52 km), Pahalgam (95 km), Sonamarg (80 km) or onward to Ladakh begins here. Our Srinagar tours typically pair two to three nights in Dal Lake houseboats with day trips to nearby hill stations.
Must-see places in Srinagar
Dal Lake & Shikara Ride
The postcard image of Kashmir. Glide past floating gardens, Char Chinar and wooden houseboats. Read the Srinagar shikara ride guide for cost, route and timing tips.
Mughal Gardens
Chashme Shahi, Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh — three 17th-century terraced gardens on the banks of Dal Lake, each with fountains, chinar trees and views over the valley. In spring, pair them with Tulip Garden Srinagar.
Old City & Jamia Masjid
The timber-pillared Jamia Masjid, Pathar Masjid, Khanqah of Shah Hamadan and the winding lanes of Nowhatta — a walk through centuries of Kashmiri craft and architecture.
Shankaracharya Temple
Perched 1,100 feet above the city on Takht-e-Suleiman hill. The climb rewards you with the best 360° panorama of Srinagar, Dal Lake and the encircling Pir Panjal range.
Hazratbal Shrine
Kashmir's most revered Muslim shrine, with its signature white marble dome mirrored on the northern shore of Dal Lake. Visit at dusk when the lights reflect across the water.
Nigeen Lake & Floating Markets
Nigeen Lake is quieter than Dal and is favoured by long-stay houseboat guests. Compare Dal and Nigeen in the Srinagar houseboat stay guide.
Best time to visit Srinagar
Spring (Mar–May)
Tulip Garden blooms late March to early April; mild 15–22°C. Ideal for gardens and shikara rides.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
Pleasant 25–30°C when most of India swelters. Peak season — book early for houseboats.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
Chinar leaves turn crimson, cool evenings, thin crowds. Photographer's favourite.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Snow occasionally blankets the city. Houseboats stay warm with bukhari stoves. Good for couples.
How to reach Srinagar
By air: Srinagar International Airport (SXR) is 15 km from the city centre and connects daily with Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jammu and Leh. Pre-paid taxis and ATARA airport transfers take 30–45 minutes to Dal Lake.
By road: NH-44 links Srinagar to Jammu (270 km / 8–10 hrs) via Banihal tunnel and the Chenani-Nashri tunnel. The route passes through the Pir Panjal range and is spectacular in late spring.
By rail: Jammu Tawi is the nearest major railhead (270 km). Trains from Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata connect here, followed by road transfer to Srinagar. A direct rail link from Jammu to Srinagar via the USBRL project is progressively opening.

Srinagar is the main arrival and stay base for most Kashmir trips. Tourist areas such as Dal Lake, Boulevard Road and Mughal Gardens see routine visitor movement. Use registered hotels and transport, carry ID, avoid sensitive areas unless advised locally, and check current advisories close to travel.
Absolutely — it's the signature Kashmir experience. We recommend either a sunrise ride for the floating market or a sunset ride for reflections. See the shikara ride guide for current planning ranges and route tips.
Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden sits on the foothills of Zabarwan range. It opens for a short spring window, typically around late March to April. Dates vary each year based on bloom and official announcements.
Yes. Houseboats are moored on Dal and Nigeen lakes and range from Deluxe to Luxury categories. Each has 2–6 bedrooms with attached baths, carpeted lounges and verandahs over the water. Our Kashmir packages usually include 1–2 nights on a houseboat.
Wazwan is the traditional Kashmiri multi-course feast (up to 36 courses). Signature dishes include rogan josh, gushtaba, rista and tabak maaz. Ask your ATARA host to arrange a Wazwan dinner at a family-run home or a heritage restaurant in the Old City.
