Quick answer for Drung Waterfall

Drung Waterfall, also written as Drang Waterfall, has become one of Kashmir’s most searched winter photo stops because the falls can freeze into dramatic icicles near Tangmarg. It is usually visited as a side trip while going to or returning from Gulmarg.

The place is simple, scenic and seasonal. It should not be treated like a fully controlled attraction. In winter the approach can be icy, crowded and slippery, so footwear and timing matter more than people expect.

Best time: Jan-Feb for frozen views; Mar-Jun for water flow

Typical duration: 1-2 hours

Cost snapshot: Nominal local entry/parking/activity charges may apply; transport is the main cost.

Plan clearly

What to know before you go

Winter visit

Frozen waterfall

Best chance in January and February after sustained cold.

Spring visit

Water flow and picnic stop

Less icy, more comfortable, but not the frozen spectacle.

Route

Near Tangmarg

Works well before or after Gulmarg, not as a separate full-day plan.

Footwear

Grip is important

Ice and wet rock can be dangerous around photo spots.

Best Time to Visit Drung Waterfall

Visit in January or February for the best chance of frozen icicles. March to June is better for flowing water and a softer picnic-style stop. In summer and autumn it is pleasant, but it may not justify a large detour unless you are already near Tangmarg.

How to Reach

Drung is near Tangmarg, on the Gulmarg side of the valley. Most travellers add it while travelling between Srinagar and Gulmarg. In winter, expect controls, chain vehicles or road-condition delays depending on snow.

Photography and Safety

Photos are best when ice has formed fully, but do not climb under unstable icicles or walk onto wet frozen edges. Keep children away from the slippery spray zone. Use waterproof shoes or snow boots in deep winter.

How to Combine With Gulmarg

If your Gulmarg day is focused on the Gondola, do Drung after returning towards Tangmarg. If Phase 2 closes or the weather is poor, Drung can be a useful backup winter stop.
