Winter & Snow in Kashmir
Gulmarg skiing, frozen Dal Lake mornings and snow honeymoons from December to February
Winter & Snow in Kashmir with ATARA
Kashmir in winter is a completely different country from Kashmir in summer. The chinar leaves are long gone. The Dal Lake mornings come wrapped in mist. And Gulmarg, at 2,650 m, turns into one of Asia\'s genuinely world-class ski destinations — with 3 km of gondola lift serving 1,300 m of vertical drop.
Most first-time winter visitors come for the snow experience rather than skiing proper — to stand in waist-deep powder, ride the Gulmarg Gondola to Phase 2 at 3,979 m, add Drung Waterfall when road conditions allow, warm up by a wood fire in a cedar cottage, and come home with the kind of photos that get asked about for years.
We run winter packages December through February. Gulmarg is the anchor; Srinagar stays open throughout; Pahalgam is pretty when cleared; Sonamarg is inaccessible from late November. Peak snowfall is mid-January to mid-February, which is also peak pricing — book 6–8 weeks ahead.

Phase 1 (Kongdoori at 3,080 m) runs most days. Phase 2 (Apharwat at 3,979 m) is weather-dependent — strong wind or heavy snow closes it. We pre-book tickets and reschedule if Phase 2 is shut on your day.
Yes — Gulmarg has a beginner zone with certified instructors. Use the Gulmarg skiing and snowboarding guide to understand lessons, rentals and safety before booking.
Srinagar: –2 to 8°C days, –5 to 2°C nights. Gulmarg: –5 to 4°C days, –10 to –15°C nights in deep winter. Feels colder with wind. Proper insulated jacket, thermal base layers, snow boots are essential — we share a packing list.
Yes with experienced drivers and snow chains — ATARA uses both. The 55-km route from Srinagar is routinely plowed. In very heavy snowfall, authorities close the road for safety — we reroute to Pahalgam or Dal Lake activities.
Some snowfall in Srinagar most years in January, but it usually melts within 24–48 hours. For guaranteed deep snow, Gulmarg is the destination.
