The Gulmarg Gondola is the single most searched activity in Kashmir because it solves a very clear travel intent: how do you reach snow and high Himalayan views without doing a trek? The ride has two main sightseeing stages. Phase 1 runs from Gulmarg to Kongdoori; Phase 2 continues from Kongdoori towards Apharwat, where weather, wind and altitude become the main variables.
For most first-time travellers, the biggest mistake is not understanding that the Gondola is slot-based and weather-dependent. A ticket is not the same as a guaranteed smooth ride to Phase 2. You need matching timing, valid ID, enough buffer, warm clothing, and a plan B if the upper section closes.
Best time: Dec-Mar for snow, May-Sep for clearer views
Typical duration: 3-5 hours including queues
Cost snapshot: Officially revised periodically; recent public tariff references show about INR 800-1,000 per standard sightseeing phase, plus taxes/fees.
Gulmarg to Kongdoori
Lower altitude, easier for families, views over meadows and pine slopes.
Kongdoori to Apharwat side
Higher, colder and more weather-sensitive; avoid if anyone is unwell at altitude.
Use the official J&K Cable Car portal
Avoid touts and black-market tickets. Carry matching photo ID and e-ticket.
Keep half a day
Peak queues, security checks and winter road controls can stretch the schedule.
Choose Phase 1 if you are travelling with small children, elders, or anyone who only wants a scenic cable-car experience. Choose Phase 2 if the weather is clear, you are comfortable with high altitude, and you want the snow/viewpoint experience near Apharwat. In winter, skiers use the upper mountain differently from casual sightseeing visitors, so do not follow ski tracks or step beyond marked areas.
JKCCC controls the official ticketing and can revise rates, refund rules and on-cabin ticket windows. Public 2026 references place standard sightseeing tickets around INR 800 for Phase 1 and INR 1,000 for Phase 2, with Tatkal and service fees varying. Treat these as planning figures, then verify on the official portal before paying.
Carry the same ID used while booking. If you book Phase 2 separately, keep your Phase 1 transaction details handy because upper-phase booking flows may ask for the lower-phase ticket reference.
Phase 2 can close because of wind, visibility, snow or operational safety decisions. At the upper section, walk slowly, hydrate and avoid running for photos. Travellers with serious heart, breathing or altitude-related concerns should either stay at Phase 1 or ask a doctor before riding higher.
For a Srinagar-based day trip, leave early and treat Gondola as the anchor activity, not as one stop among many. If Gulmarg is your overnight stay, ride the Gondola in the first half of the day and keep the afternoon for the meadow, St. Mary’s Church, golf course, or Drung Waterfall on the Tangmarg side.

Yes if the weather is clear and your group is comfortable with high altitude. If visibility is poor or anyone feels unwell, Phase 1 is the better practical choice.
JKCCC notifications have mentioned limited on-cabin ticket windows at the waiting hall, subject to availability. Online booking remains the safest planning route in peak season.
Reach well before your slot, especially in winter and summer holiday weeks. Road checks, parking, walking to the base and security queues can all add time.
Public booking guides commonly state that very young children may be free while older children need full tickets, but this can change. Verify the rule on the official portal on your booking date.
Yes. Upper mountain operations depend on wind, snow, visibility and safety calls. Keep a flexible Gulmarg day and do not build a tight same-day onward transfer around Phase 2.
Gulmarg Gondola operations, rates, slots and refund rules can change quickly. Always verify critical ticket details on the official JKCCC portal before travelling.
