About Gurez Valley

Why visit Gurez Valley?

Gurez Valley is one of Kashmir's strongest offbeat travel opportunities: a remote Bandipora district valley beyond Razdan Pass, known for Dawar village, the Kishanganga River and the pyramid-like Habba Khatoon Peak. It is not a casual add-on to a packed first-time itinerary. It deserves its own planning, buffer and local confirmation.

The drive from Srinagar climbs through Bandipora and Razdan Pass before dropping into a landscape that feels different from central Kashmir: wooden homes, open fields, a cold river and fewer commercial stops. That distance is exactly why Gurez has search demand. Travellers want to know whether it is worth the effort, when it opens, where to stay and whether it is safe for families.

ATARA recommends Gurez for repeat Kashmir travellers, photographers and guests who are comfortable with simpler stays. For first-time family trips, use it only if you can spare at least two nights and keep a weather buffer.

Habba Khatoon Peak

The signature mountain of Gurez and the strongest photo landmark in the valley. It looks different through the day as light moves across the face.

Kishanganga River

The river runs through Dawar and gives Gurez its quiet rhythm. Stay cautious near fast flow and avoid river edges after rain.

Dawar Village

The main tourism base of Gurez, with simple stays, local meals and access to nearby viewpoints. Book ahead in peak summer.

Mountain pass view on the road to Gurez

Razdan Pass

A high mountain pass that controls Gurez access. Weather here is the biggest reason to verify conditions before departure.

Remote meadow side valley used for Tulail Gurez planning

Tulail Side Valley

A more remote extension beyond Dawar for travellers with enough time, daylight and local clearance. Keep this flexible rather than fixed.

Plan your trip

Best time to visit Gurez Valley

Late Spring (May)

Road opening depends on snow clearance. Do not assume access without same-week confirmation.

Summer (Jun-Aug)

Best practical window for most travellers, with greener fields and the highest chance of road access.

Autumn (Sep-Oct)

Beautiful clear light and harvest scenes, but nights turn cold and access can become less predictable later in October.

Winter (Nov-Apr)

Not suitable for normal tourism because heavy snow can close the pass for long periods.

Getting there

How to reach Gurez Valley

From Srinagar: Plan 120-125 km and around 6-7 hours via Bandipora and Razdan Pass. Start very early and avoid night driving on the mountain section.

Access: Carry government ID. Rules and checks can change because Gurez is a sensitive border-region valley. Foreign nationals and remote side routes should be confirmed before booking.

Best format: Stay at least 2 nights in or around Dawar. A rushed same-day Gurez trip from Srinagar is not recommended.

Frequently asked

Gurez Valley — FAQ

Gurez is normally planned in summer after Razdan Pass access stabilises. Because the route is weather-sensitive, confirm current road status close to travel.

Two nights is the minimum sensible plan. One night makes the drive too heavy, and a same-day trip from Srinagar is not recommended.

Usually no. First-time travellers should cover Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg first. Gurez is better as an offbeat extension for travellers with more time.

Longer custom versions of Kashmir Odyssey, Scenic Kashmir or Paradise Kashmir can include Gurez with two extra nights.

Indian tourists generally travel with ID checks, but access requirements can change. Foreign nationals and side valleys need special caution and advance verification.
